Vietnam's entry at this year's Miss International pageant, Huynh Thi Thanh Thuy, won the title after defeating 75 competitors from around the globe.
Huynh Thi Thanh Thuy of Vietnam won the title of Miss International 2024. Thuy posted the photo on Instagram.
Thuy broke down in tears when she heard her name called as the champion during the final on Tuesday night in Tokyo. The audience cheered as Andrea Rubio, the Venezuelan Miss International 2023, placed the crown on Thuy's head.
Following the coronation, she declared, "I am the first Miss Vietnam to attend Miss International, and I am now the first Miss International from Vietnam." "I can now at last demonstrate that I am deserving of all the love and support I receive from my Vietnamese and international audience. Thank you very much.
Contestants from Bolivia, Venezuela, Spain, and Indonesia were named first and fourth runners-up, respectively.
Thuy participated in the traditional costume competition at the start of the last night, wearing a design called "Lua Nang Sen" (Lotus Silk), which was made by designer Bui Cong Thien Bao and was influenced by traditional Vietnamese weaving.
During the evening gown segment, she wore a stunning gown by Vietnamese designer Le Thanh Hoa, embodying the traditional Miss International colors of white and pink. The gown had a sweetheart neckline and a mermaid silhouette, perfectly highlighting Thuy’s figure, with a long, elegant train attached at the back that added an extra layer of sophistication.
During the final night's interview, Thuy was asked: "What has been the most significant global development that affected your generation’s educational system?"
For her answer, Thuy focused on the rise of global education technology during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"During COVID-19, we had to stay at home and learn online," she explained. "This provided an opportunity for EdTech to grow, giving students more ways to explore and learn."
She added that this aligns with the United Nations’ fourth Sustainable Development Goal—"Quality Education"—as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted in 2015.
EdTech, short for Educational Technology, involves integrating technology into education to enrich learning experiences.
Thuy’s mother arrived in Japan on Monday to support her daughter in the finals, cheering with pride and shedding tears of joy as Thuy advanced through the competition.
At 22, Thuy holds the title of Miss Vietnam 2022. She is currently studying at both the University of Foreign Languages under the University of Da Nang and Greenwich University Vietnam.
Thuy has performed consistently throughout Miss International’s sub-contests. Missosology, a prominent beauty pageant site, has rated her highly since the early rounds, even predicting her as a strong contender for the title. In the lead-up to the final, she also drew attention from beauty experts for her poise and confidence.
Miss International, one of the world’s top three major beauty pageants along with Miss World and Miss Universe, was first held in 1960 and is organized annually in Japan.
