Health authorities said on Saturday that they had identified Canada's first suspected case of H5 bird flu in a teenager in the western province of British Columbia.
The government stated that it was looking into the teen's connections and the source of exposure. In a post on X, Canada's Health Minister Mark Holland stated that there is still little risk to the general people.
"This is a rare event," said Bonnie Henry, the health officer for British Columbia, in a statement. "We are conducting a thorough investigation to fully understand the source of exposure here in B.C."
In addition to being common in wild birds around the globe, H5 bird flu is now producing epidemics in poultry and dairy cows in the United States, with many human cases reported in dairy and poultry workers in the country recently.
Thus yet, there has been no indication of person-to-person transmission. However, experts have warned that a pandemic may break out if that were to occur.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requested earlier in November that agricultural workers who have come into contact with animals infected with bird flu be tested for the virus, even if they do not exhibit any symptoms.
Since March, bird flu has spread to around 450 dairy farms across 15 U.S. states, and since April, the CDC has reported 46 human instances of the disease.
Since October, at least 22 contaminated chicken farms have been found in British Columbia, Canada, and the province reports that many wild birds have tested positive.
