How Black Friday Got Its Name and Its History?

Every year, millions of people go shopping in search of the finest bargains at stores and online platforms on the day following Thanksgiving.

However, where did the term "Black Friday" originate?

In the 1950s and 1960s, the phrase first appeared in Philadelphia. It was created by local police officers to characterize the mayhem that occurred the day after Thanksgiving. A difficult and hectic day for law enforcement was brought on by a mix of excessive traffic, congested streets, and an increase in shoplifting occurrences, which were made worse by the yearly Army-Navy football game.
According to the History Channel, officers who were unable to take the day off derisively called it "Black Friday" because of the burden it placed on their resources.

Philadelphia retailers attempted, but were unsuccessful, to change the title of the day to "Big Friday" in order to eliminate its negative associations. The phrase changed to become a positive representation of retail success by the 1980s. As a result of the spike in sales, businesses started using it to characterize the day their financial accounts went "into the black," from losses to profits. When is 2024's Black Friday? Every year, the day following Thanksgiving is Black Friday. Friday, November 29, 2024, marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, when some of the year's finest bargains will be available.
