The official title for Tom Cruise's *Mission: Impossible 8* has been revealed: *The Final Reckoning*. The film, which was initially intended to be the second part of *Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning*, will now be released on May 23, 2025. The release date marks a shift from its original 2022 timeline, with delays due to the pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Cruise unveiled the title and a new poster on Monday, with the tagline, “Every choice has led to this.” Alongside the announcement, the first action-packed trailer dropped, showcasing Cruise performing a series of daring stunts: scuba diving into a wrecked submarine, skydiving from a biplane, and, of course, running through perilous situations. Angela Bassett also returns as CIA Director Erika Sloane, reprising her role from *Mission: Impossible – Fallout*.
In *Dead Reckoning*, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt faces off against a dangerous AI known as The Entity, which seems to anticipate his every move and could spell disaster if it falls into the wrong hands. The film ended with Ethan narrowly escaping a deadly train crash and uncovering that The Entity is hidden aboard an old Russian submarine. However, a long-time adversary, Gabriel (Esai Morales), is also hot on his trail.
Returning cast members for *The Final Reckoning* include Esai Morales, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Henry Czerny, Greg Tarzan Davis, Mariela Garriga, and Indira Varma. New faces joining the franchise include Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Holt McCallany, Katy O’Brian, Nick Offerman, and Tramell Tillman.
Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed and co-written several *Mission: Impossible* films, including *Rogue Nation*, *Fallout*, and *Dead Reckoning*, returns as director and co-writer. McQuarrie has previously collaborated with Cruise on *Jack Reacher* and *Top Gun: Maverick*. The script is co-written by McQuarrie, Bruce Geller, and Erik Jendresen, with Cruise and McQuarrie serving as producers. Chris Brock, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Tommy Gormley, Don Granger, and Susan Novick are executive producers, while Gina Hallas is credited as co-producer.
