As Ariana Grande assumes the role of Glinda in Wicked, she considers the emotional support provided by Kristin Chenoweth.
When Ariana Grande remembers the moment that Kristin Chenoweth, the original Glinda from Broadway's Wicked, "passed the wand" to her for the upcoming movie adaptation, she can't help but cry.
Grande, who was chosen to play Glinda in Universal's much awaited Wicked film, recently revealed a heartfelt recollection of Chenoweth's encouragement when she told her about her audition. "We had talked about it for years, but finally telling her that I wanted to audition for Glinda was something else entirely," Grande said in an episode of the Broadway Podcast Network's Wicked podcast, Sentimental Men.
"I finally told her, 'Hey, I think they're doing Wicked now, and I think I want to go for Glinda,'" Grande remembered, revealing Chenoweth's reaction. After entering the restroom and shutting the door, she began to cry. It was the world's sweetest thing. She began to cry as she exclaimed, "Oh my god, it makes me emotional." "I was hoping this would happen," she said. Baby daughter, I trust you with it because I love you. Do what you want to do. Nobody is aware of how good your instincts are. You will take them by surprise.
In 2003, the Broadway debut of the original Wicked musical, starring Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, took place. The plot, which is based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel and features music by Stephen Schwartz, chronicles the journey of two Shiz University students before telling how Elphaba turns into the Wicked Witch of the West. The program was nominated for ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Since being cast, Chenoweth has publicly backed Grande. “She was nervous,” Chenoweth recounted on The Kelly Clarkson Show. "I want to honor you while also making you proud," she remarked. "You've already made me proud," I said to her. Simply claim Glinda as your own. Do you? "Hearing her say 'I got it,' made us sound like two dolphins talking," Chenoweth, who has known Grande since she was ten, continued. I am so excited to watch her shine.
Wicked, which was directed by Jon M. Chu, also features Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Glinda's adversary. Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum are also in the adaption.
