FDA Classifies Nationwide Potato Chip Recall as salmonella warning


The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has upgraded an ongoing, nationwide recall involving nearly 700,000 bags of popular potato chips to its highest-risk classification. The federal agency designated the situation as a Class I recall, which represents the most severe safety alert level. This classification indicates that consuming or being exposed to the recalled food products carries a reasonable probability of causing serious health complications or even death.


Affected Brands and Flavors

The massive recall directly impacts approximately 684,000 bags of potato chips manufactured by Utz Quality Foods LLC, specifically targeting their popular Zapp’s and Dirty brands. The specific product varieties and flavors included in the highest-risk alert are:

  • Zapp’s Brand: Bayou Blackened Ranch, Salt and Vinegar, and Big Cheezy potato chips.
  • Dirty Brand: Salt and Vinegar, Maui Onion, and Sour Cream and Onion potato chips.

These recalled products were packaged in multiple sizes, including 1.5-ounce, 2-ounce, 2.5-ounce, and 8-ounce bags. Additionally, a 60-count bulk box of 1.5-ounce Zapp’s Salt and Vinegar chips is also covered under the active warning. Consumers are urged to check their pantries for any of these products featuring "Best-By" dates ranging from Monday, July 27, through Monday, August 31, 2026. According to the FDA, these affected batches were distributed across 35 states nationwide.


The Source of Contamination: Salmonella Risks

The voluntary recall was initially triggered after a third-party supplier notified Utz Quality Foods that a specific seasoning blend containing dry milk powder might be contaminated with Salmonella. The issue traces back to an earlier bulk supply recall by California Dairies Inc., which raised alarms regarding potential Salmonella presence in powdered milk and buttermilk ingredients. This broader ingredient issue has also forced recalls for other major brands, including specific powdered beverage mixes from Ghirardelli.

Salmonella is a severe bacterium capable of causing dangerous and sometimes fatal foodborne illnesses. While healthy individuals infected with Salmonella typically experience uncomfortable symptoms like sudden fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, the infection can become incredibly dangerous for vulnerable populations. Young children, senior citizens, and anyone with a compromised immune system face a significantly higher risk of life-threatening complications.


Current Status and Guidelines for Consumers

Utz Quality Foods has clarified that the seasoning batches utilized in their potato chips actually tested negative for Salmonella prior to distribution. Furthermore, no consumer illnesses or medical incidents have been reported in connection with the chips to date. Despite these negative tests, the company is moving forward with the Class I recall out of an abundance of caution to ensure complete consumer safety.

The FDA strongly advises anyone who has purchased the recalled Zapp’s or Dirty brand potato chips to stop eating them immediately. The products should either be thrown away securely or returned directly to the retail store where they were purchased to receive a full refund.
